The Daily PPILL #16 – Integration

I don’t think I am going out on a limb saying that there are very few products in the market that work on their own. Most things need other products that work together with them and in many cases, they even have to be part of an ecosystem, “integrated” or put together.

This is different from breaking down a product into its components, which we have been doing from the beginning of time. Having a manufacturer put together all the pieces of a solution and providing a finished, ready product, stops making sense when either the degree of specialization of each of the components is extremely high, or when there is a high degree of customization necessary to meet the customer’s demands. There is even the possibility of just slightly improving on the main product, “accessorizing” it.

Most of the time, this accessorizing, and customizing do not fit into the manufacturer’s business. In this scenario, the best alternative is to find partners who are capable of doing whatever is needed. The result is a broader customer appeal, and generally a happier customer.

Integration is at the heart of partnering.

Breaking Bread – The Daily PPILL #268

We have to nourish our bodies, but since ancient times, there is something about sharing a meal that makes us more human. Most species compete for the food available, with the exception of small offspring. But we humans do something remarkable: we share. And together with what we share on the table, we share stories, and we check-in with each...

Ready to go (always) – The Daily PPILL #261

Dogs are fantastic animals, and they give us so much. Company is one of those things. The also ground us, make us appreciate the moment, the simple things. If you take a dog for a walk, you cannot rush it, you have to stop, let it in; and only then continue. But the greatest thing about dogs is that they are always ready to go, They always look...

Totally Over the Top (OTT) – The Daily PPILL #256

Some of my Mobile World Congress-going friends may yawn at this one, but a few days ago, Thierry Breton, the European Internal Market and Industry Commissioner brought up again, the imbalance on how many tech giants like Google and Netflix (sometimes called over-the-top services), benefit from the existence of high speed networks, and how they...

Catnap – The Daily PPILL #254

Cats don't train. Don't lift weights. They do yoga stretches, but not like reps, just one, or two. And then, when something pikes their interest, they go into an explosive display of motion. Once done, they are back to napping. We are not cats. We can't just nap and launch into acrobatics, but wouldn't that be cool?

The space in the middle – The Daily PPILL #251

Nothing is either black or white, red or blue. When we categorize things, what happens in the spaces between? Is someone who has $999,999 in the bank less a millionaire than someone holding $1,000,001? Same thing happens to -for example- partner categories. The question is, how hard or painful are we making it for those at the edges?

Looking like a fool in order not be one – The Daily PPILL #246

There is only two ways to get better at something: By learning and by practicing. Learning implies we'll do new things, that we will challenge the way we see things and go against our own grain. When we learn, things may seem wrong, and we should be willing to change our minds. Practicing, on the other side, implies that we'll start doing things...

The private driveway – The Daily PPILL #241

A few days ago, we were walking the dog, and made a turn at the corner. As we walked on that street, another dog started barking, and then something unusual happened: a lady came out of one of the houses, and she asked us in a friendly voice: “hello, what can I help you with?” Felt quite out of place to me, accustomed to hear that mostly only at...

Quote week: Navigating uncertainty – The Daily PPILL #236

We value confidence highly. Moving through uncertainty with determination is something we expect from every great leader. A strong hand that holds the reigns and that keeps us in-line to achieve the goal. But we must not confuse this with certainty, nor with being naïve and failing to recognize the difficulties or the obstacles. If there is a...

The Ice King – The Daily PPILL #231

If you lived in the 1800's, there was no way to order a drink "on the rocks". Maybe during the winter, but then you probably yearned for something warmer. Simply, there was no way to effectively manufacture ice. This made it also very difficult to store food for long periods of time over the summer. There was one man, Frederick Tudor, who saw an...

Faking a smile – The Daily PPILL #226

It may not be that bad to fake a smile every once and then. Happiness is one of those things that you have to pretend to do, until you are actually doing it. Like falling asleep. Very few people can turn a switch and declare "I am sleeping now". Most of us lay down, shut our eyes, pretend to sleep until we are really doing it. Riding a bicycle is...

Restarting – The Daily PPILL in 2023!

Restarting may feel almost as hard as starting from nothing. But it's not, and part of what makes it easier is that we already know quite a bit about where we are going. It is a new year, and that offers all of us to be a "new you", but we will never ever really be able to start from scratch. I will also be restarting the Daily PPILL next week,...

Great, you’re a contrarian. But right or wrong? – The Daily PPILL #221

I am sure you have heard it before “Facts are stubborn things...”. Their stubbornness lies in proving you wrong if you are. Going against the grain, being "different" can give you a huge upside, especially if you are participating in a zero sum game, but only if you're right. If you are part of a cult and drop everything to be the only few who...

We know shadow from light – The Daily PPILL #216

This is not a colored page. It is not a gradient created in Photoshop. It is a clear blue sky. An actual picture taken with my phone. But how would you know the difference if there's not a single cloud? We know shadow from light, and light from shadow. When everything is going good, we can get so easily fooled into seeing everything as plain,...

The customer is always right – The Daily PPILL #211

Actions speak louder than words. It doesn't matter what our story is, if we don't support it with the way we provide our products or services to our customers. The story will not change the actions, and especially not change what the customer perceives as the outcome. A few days ago I went to pickup my lunch. I did request two sides, and no...

Thank you! – The Daily PPILL #209

Hello all. Today, tonight, make sure that we appreciate the gifts of life, and that we let our closest ones know how grateful we are for their presence. If you want, do the exercise of looking through the goals you set out for yourself in the beginning of 2022, and see which ones you achieved. Feel the gratitude. Nothing much more matters, I just...

Things you may add to your Thanksgiving gratitude list – The Daily PPILL #208

Hey! It is THAT time of the year when we HAVE to be grateful. It is like we have to drop everything else that we are doing and say thanks for what we have. Overall, it is a good thing. A great thing. We can all be grateful for the things that we have around us and that we take for granted. For one, I am grateful for my good health, and my...

It is not all our fault – The Daily PPILL #206

Our go-get-it culture constantly repeats us that we can be anything we want to be. The only thing needed is some focus and lots of hard work. Part of this is absolutely true. We live in times where individuals have a great power over their future, and they can intentionally shape it. At least in the west, we are in a much better place, and skin...

Validation vs. Desire – The Daily PPILL #201

Validation is a great motivator. I know. It is for me. The applause at the end of the performance, the pat in the back. Feeling part of the group, being looked at with admiration, makes me feel proud. But validation by itself cannot be the driver of our lives. It is frail, competing for everybody's attention, and many times it fails to recognize...

The last chart of the Internet – The Daily PPILL #196

Well, maybe. I love charts and beautiful and imaginative ways of representing data, and I discovered a new type of chart -at least for me- because of the labor of love of a gentleman called Phineas. You can see how plastic waste is processed HERE, in his appropriately titled blog "Sankey Diagrams". For 15 years he has been posting examples, and...

Eat my brains out – The Daily PPILL #191 Halloween Edition

Americans, we are suckers for zombie shows and movies. How many more can we have? I have heard that we even make special weapons for those who want to prepare themselves for a zombie apocalypse. (I am not sure which part of that sentence is more wrong). Decomposing, yet almost invincible, half humans the relentlessly hunt us, and that plague our...

Joshua Bell – The Daily PPILL #181

Have two and half minutes? Give it a watch. How many people can you count that leave a tip for the musician? It is hard with the time-lapse, but let's say it's like a dozen. Out of hundreds of people passing by. How many people stop to listen to him? One leans against the column for a while. But it is not until when someone (the lady with the...

Insignificant – The Daily PPILL #176

When you don't complete your plans. How bad does that make you feel? Sometimes, we spend a sizable amount of time fleshing out every detail on how will we achieve our objectives. And we put a lot of effort in executing every step. But sometimes things get in the way and we just cannot meet deadlines. Never is that so evident as in the face of a...

Always a celebration – The Daily PPILL #166

Dogs have some fantastic things about them. One is the way they just don't care about how we may be judging them. In one seamless move they can just lick whatever body part and then, lick your face. Our dog -like many others- doesn't wait until someone scratches her back. She just goes and does it herself. She doesn't wait for someone, but she...

Who are you comparing yourself against? – The Daily PPILL #161

In the words of Naval Ravikant, "in modern life, what happens is -like- the person who is the best at doing something in the world will get to do it for the entire world...through a combination of leverage and distribution and accountability and specific knowledge" And the problem with this, is that there is always someone better to compare...

Information is power – The Daily PPILL #156

I have been hearing this since I was a kid. "Information is power". It was usually associated to some specific item of knowledge. Something that would allow someone to take advantage, to do some arbitrage, even blackmail someone. And most of my life, it continued to be this way. Power was concentrated in capital goods, production, natural...
