Re-post: Change before change gets to you – The Daily PPILL #306

There is nothing worse than getting caught in something that you did not expect, that you did not prepare for.

When you know something is coming, it allows you to build the necessary skills, strength, or resources to be in a better position. In addition, it also allows you to get out of other competing endeavors.

So if that’s settled, let’s look into the other side of things. “The only constant is change”, we say. If we ever had a doubt, the last few years should have dissipated it. In if that is so, the conclusion is that inevitably you are going to be faced with something you were not expecting, and you will be forced to change.

Unless…

You actively seek and introduce change into your life (business, work, etc.).

Changing before change gets to you is the only way to stay ahead of the curve.

Finding Momentum in Resistance – The Daily PPILL #325

We need some resistance. I do. Nowhere is this more palpable than when you are in the water. You can feel the water pushing against you as you move. And that is a good thing, because paddling, pushing the water away from you, is what propels us forward. There is also our own awareness of that resistance, which lets us know that what we are doing...

Precipice or Summit: How success depends on perspective – The Daily PPILL #320

You are standing at the same place. It is what it is. You have bee hiking for the last four hours. One foot in front of the other. Negotiating the rocks, the roots. Turning each switchback in expectation of being closer to the summit. Just the occasional sip of water and the permeating aroma of the woods that make you forget how tired you are....

The Power of Intent: How the Future shapes the present – The Daily PPILL #316

The usually accepted thinking, is that the past shapes our present. We look into history to understand who we are. We even have a maxim in digital communications that goes "the best prediction of the next sample, is the immediately prior one". All of these are logic and have elements of truth. However, if you want to change things, you have to...

Flower Power – The Daily PPILL #314

My anniversary was a few days ago. Of course I did get a gift, and I did make a reservation for dinner. But on this day, I like to wake up my wife to the aroma of flowers, but I don't want the flowers to whither overnight, so I had to make a customary dash in the morning to the nearest spot where I could get flowers. On my way out, a clerk smiled...

Love (for the B-Listers) makes the world go ’round – The Daily PPILL #313

We live in a world of A-lists. It is very easy to hear it "straight from the horse's mouth". If a celebrity is on Twitter, or any other platform, we can just follow them, watch their videos on YouTube or perhaps buy their book. That is wonderful. There has never been as much quality (and crappy as well) and variety of information out there since...

Re-post: The one thing you should do today – The Daily PPILL #308

Before you do anything else, ask yourself: "What is the one thing that I can (and must) do today to get me closer to my goals?" If you do nothing else, do that one thing. It will be worth more, and you'll feel more satisfied than after a full day of nonsense and busyness.

Re-post: Determination – The Daily PPILL #305

If we don’t have the will, we’ll never get things done. We may never even get started. Hannibal (not the fictional serial killer of “Silence of the Lambs”, but the Carthaginian general), has been recognized as one of the greatest military strategists of all times. Among other things, he famously invaded Italy (and the Roman Republic) during the...

Re-post: Navigating uncertainty – The Daily PPILL #301

We value confidence highly. Moving through uncertainty with determination is something we expect from every great leader. A strong hand that holds the reigns and that keeps us in-line to achieve the goal. But we must not confuse this with certainty, nor with being naïve and failing to recognize the difficulties or the obstacles. If there is a...

Are you strategic? or more of a tactical person? – The Daily PPILL #297

I bet you have heard this question in one or another form. For most people you cannot be both. In their mind, is like oil and water. Better to keep it separate. I personally think that you cannot do a good job at either one if you don't understand the other side. Here is why: Strategy gives you purpose Knowing what's the overall strategy, the...

“I have read all the books” – The Daily PPILL #296

Most knowledge workers have benefited from a model where we learned the skills, and then, we sold our skilled work. Sometimes to other people that didn't have the skills, and sometimes to an organization that needed an army of skilled workers. We didn't even need a lot of experience. It was enough if "I have read all the books". This model was...

Zero emissions – The Daily PPILL #295

Mi next car, if any, will probably be electric. Electric cars not only are cool, silent, and have no emissions; but they also have less moving parts, and especially, no internal combustion engine. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate engines, I am actually a sucker for them. Having built a couple of engines from scratch, I can talk shop. When you see...

Don’t like the fish – The Daily PPILL #293

Right. So that was kind of a lame post yesterday. Sort of dry. Right? I felt it was necessary, because what I really wanted to talk about is the fish chart, and how most management teams and investors don't like it at first. The fish chart, just like its eatable counterpart, is an acquired taste. This particular shape happens when there are two...

Scouts into the wild … market – The Daily PPILL #290

A few days ago, I was listening to an interview with a Game Warden from California. The picture he painted about how drug cartels are "shortening the supply chain", bringing to the United States their operations, and growing illegal marijuana a few miles away from major urban centers, using forbidden fertilizers and pesticides, diverting streams,...

The god machine – The Daily PPILL #282

Today I'll continue my rant about AI. But will let Sam Harris do the honors. Wait, who? Sam Harris. Mr. Harris is a neuroscientist among other things, but he is also considered a modern philosopher by some and has been on a spiritual path of his own. Along the way he released a meditation app for the iPhone, called "Waking Up". For more on...

The Compassionate No: Balancing Empathy and Business Needs – The Daily PPILL #280

Saying "No" can make us free. It frees us from doing the things that drain the soul out of our bodies, the things that we will regret we did. In business, it can free us from doing things that cost us money, or that don't make us money, or the things that we are not particularly good at doing, and more importantly, from doing the things that are...

Artificial Trust – The Daily PPILL #275

I have been experimenting with ChatGPT lately, trying to find some useful application for it. In that process, I try to run some of my searches both through a search engine and also ask the bot for it. In one of my last tests, I asked ChatGPT to cite its sources, and she did, giving me a few research papers with their authors. When I couldn't...

Better than a Post-Mortem – The Daily PPILL #270

You probably know what a post-mortem is, right? That's when we failed (whatever that means), and in order to learn from it and to give it our best effort so that it never happens again, we tease out every single detail of what went wrong. Then there is the PRE-mortem, which serves a different purpose. A pre-mortem can help us to avoid failure,...

Not imperfect – The Daily PPILL #265

In a time where there are some layoffs going on, I know some of our colleagues may have been affected. There is a tendency to ostracize those who are going through this ordeal, and the truth is that, in our economy, it happens cyclically with every boom and bust cycle. The economic engine revs up, and then slows down, which for most companies...

Serendipity – The Daily PPILL #255

The hardest problem, is to figure out things. Once we know how things work, we just have to go through the motions and produce an output. Much harder is when we face we the uncertain, when we don't know exactly how things work, and figuring out things is part of the job. Running experiments is the only way to learn, and the rewards are also...

Things we must finish (or not) – The Daily PPILL #250

None of us like to be called a quitter. But there are things that we must finish, and some others that we don't have to. It is important to know where each thing sits, to avoid to spend too much time and get anxious about the ones that are optional. It is nice to finish every project that we start, but there are occasions when abandoning...

Quote week: Determination – The Daily PPILL #240

If we don’t have the will, we’ll never get things done. We may never even get started. Hannibal (not the fictional serial killer of “Silence of the Lambs”, but the Carthaginian general), has been recognized as one of the greatest military strategists of all times. Among other things, he famously invaded Italy (and the Roman Republic) during the...

“Make yourself scarce” The Daily PPILL #235

I was told this the other day. It was friendly though, and was followed by a “if you know what I mean”. The well-intended fella was just communicating that by staying out of other people’s way, by not being around too much, others could do their jobs more efficiently. But he also implied, to be available, if needed, by request. The expression is...

Golden parachutes – The Daily PPILL #230

CEOs are the Kings of today. They have tremendous power over the people that work for them, and enjoy fame and riches. And while kings not always had the merit to be named, and their power went so far as to decide on the life or death of their subjects, and to send them to war on a whim, deciding what their futures would be; it was also true that...

Ask better questions – The Daily PPILL #220

Voltaire said once: "Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.". He obviously forgot about the ladies, but we'll give a pass to the French enlightenment philosopher and civil liberties advocate. The "terrible twos" are a remarkable age during the development of children, and they are usually accompanied by a non-stop barrage of...

These three simple things could save your children’s lives – The Daily PPILL #215

We have created a climate mess. We are heading straight to disaster unless we accelerate the world's transition into an economy that is not harmless to our planet. If you believe this, don't loose your hope, here are three things that you can do to pull your weight: REDUCE YOUR USE OF PLASTIC It is hard, but not THAT hard. Start with the plastic...
