Restarting – The Daily PPILL in 2023!

Restarting may feel almost as hard as starting from nothing. But it’s not, and part of what makes it easier is that we already know quite a bit about where we are going.

It is a new year, and that offers all of us to be a “new you”, but we will never ever really be able to start from scratch.

I will also be restarting the Daily PPILL next week, but I wanted to share what to expect in 2023:

  • Will still be Daily. Why? Isn’t it the Daily PPILL? Frankly, it is about the habit and the discipline it creates.
  • It may be even shorter some days. I heard from a few of you that short is good. Let’s build on that.
  • But there will be longer form content as well. As I mentioned at some point, I feel I am shortchanging some of you who may want to hear about business-related topics that I may have something to contribute about, and many times it is not possible to do a decent job at it in just a few paragraphs. Because of this, I am committing to create, once a week, a longer piece of content, about the Channel, Operations, and/or Services. Will figure out a way to appeal to the TLDR crowd among you.

This year promises to be very challenging one. Many of the usual experts have been talking about recession and we have already seen some good people let go of their positions in response to this contraction. But I remain optimistic and I think that the industry as a whole will adapt and flourish, mostly because technologists, when we see challenges and complexity, we don’t flee, we run towards it. Here’s a few other reasons:

  • The “new normal” isn’t going away, and we still haven’t figured it out. Remote work, and a significant number of people migrating from region to region opens lots of opportunities that we haven’t thought about. We are more efficient when we don’t have to commute and when we can run the dryer at the same time we work on our emails, but we also crave to get out of the house and see other people.
  • Cybersecurity concerns have only increased in the last few months and attackers are becoming undiscriminating. There is a huge opportunity in identifying threats and making our digital ecosystem more secure.
  • Some disruptive technologies are on the cusp of becoming mainstream. In my opinion, the most disruptive technologies (in my area, I know Cold Fusion is out there), are 5G, AI, Blockchain, and IoT. AI has made headlines lately, and once we get over FTX, Blockchain will come back with increased momentum. 5G’s impact hasn’t been as big, mostly because of the operators’ strategy of having a 4G & 5G networks coexist, but as equipment ages, we’ll see more 5G coverage.
  • The above will all be underpinned by the global supply chain resurrecting from its ashes. We’ll see a different model, with more domestic production and near-shoring (didn’t Biden, Lopez-Obrador, and Trudeau just meet?), but the factories in China will come back online providing some surplus, which will tame inflation; all this, in the fading challenges of a global pandemic.

We should be very grateful, here’s to 2023 and a whole year of possibilities!

The Unstoppable Force: Momentum – The Daily PPILL #329

In a world where technology is constantly advancing, simple yet ingenious inventions can capture our attention. The humble flywheel, often overlooked, these rotating wonders possess an appeal that inspires me, especially now that I am more and more involved with the creation of Exponential Organizations and the exponential technologies that are...

The time for ideas – The Daily PPILL #328

"An idea ahead of its time" Bet you heard that before. I have not only heard about it, I have lived through these, at least a couple of times trying to be way too cute and not getting the timing right. Just two examples: wanting to can coconut water in 1989, or starting a food delivery platform over the Internet in 2002. How to know? When is an...

Reimagining the Third Place: The Dynamics of Home, Work, and Escapes – The Daily PPILL #327

I bet you heard about "The Third Place". The concept was more in the popular media once Starbucks started to talk about it. If you have never heard about it, your first place is your home, your second place is work, and then we all have this need to escape somewhere else, that's the third place. I've been riding this pony since the 2000's, when...

The balancing act of freedom and accuracy in the Digital Age – The Daily PPILL #326

We love to demonize the press. The "mainstream media". They are out to manipulate us. Some of the more extreme argue that we should just get all our news and information (and therefore facts) from the uncensored, uncurated social media platforms, like Twitter. "Straight from the horse's mouth". I cannot say that there isn't a piece of this...

Finding Momentum in Resistance – The Daily PPILL #325

We need some resistance. I do. Nowhere is this more palpable than when you are in the water. You can feel the water pushing against you as you move. And that is a good thing, because paddling, pushing the water away from you, is what propels us forward. There is also our own awareness of that resistance, which lets us know that what we are doing...

Back of the envelope calculations – The Daily PPILL #324

You don't need to go deeply into differential calculus or any heavy math to apply one of the Enrico Fermi's most known techniques. Fermi gave us the first nuclear reactor and studied cosmic radiation and spiral galaxies. But the one thing that Fermi gave us that we can use every day is what is called a "Fermi Calculation". Probably not "invented"...

The Digital Revolution, are we there yet? – The Daily PPILL #323

We are still in the middle of one of the biggest transformations in humanity. I am thinking digitization. Sure, there are many others that are happening simultaneously and digitization started a while ago. That's how innovation works, with "nested S curves" whose effect aggregates and produces the exponentials we are experiencing. Digitization...

Against the current: The unintended consequences of change – The Daily PPILL #322

There is always at least one path of least resistance. That is less effort than any other. Partner behavior, sales focus, water, tend to flow in that direction. Most times it is also correlated with the status quo, and with our comfort zones. When we seek to make change happen, to divert things from where they are to somewhere else, chances are...

From Mediocre to Memorable: Chasing Moments of Perfection in a World of Mediocrity – The Daily PPILL #321

Most of us don't live in the Médoc in France, nor have unlimited resources to throw at our cellar, much less walk around with our personal sommelier. In consequence, we order wine, or we open a bottle at home, and is not that good. It may be too sweet, or too tanic, and may mess up our GI tract. But we keep doing this over and over again. Why?...

Precipice or Summit: How success depends on perspective – The Daily PPILL #320

You are standing at the same place. It is what it is. You have bee hiking for the last four hours. One foot in front of the other. Negotiating the rocks, the roots. Turning each switchback in expectation of being closer to the summit. Just the occasional sip of water and the permeating aroma of the woods that make you forget how tired you are....

Beyond Look and Feel: The User Interface is Key to Success – The Daily PPILL #319

"That's just look and feel" The "real" thing is what's running behind it. Or so they say. I you subscribe to thins thinking, you may be missing a fundamental fact. User Interface, or where people interact with something, is where adoption lives, and is the doorway to exponential growth. If people don't enjoy using something, they may use it a few...

Overriding the AI – The Daily PPILL #318

With all the talk about regulating AI, we hear the extremes coming to light. You have those that think we should just let everything run its course, and then there are some that think that we need a "kill switch". Others believe we need to have a human in the loop always. In many ways, this approach seems reasonable at first, but it defeats the...

The big ideas of 2020, three years later – The Daily PPILL #317

Looking back into how we imagined the future can be fascinating. We have all snickered when watching the Jetsons and we have turned "where's my jet pack" into kind of a critique of predictions in general. THIS ARTICLE was a featured article on LinkedIn in December 2019, and we all know what happened after that. We experienced first-hand Mike...

The Power of Intent: How the Future shapes the present – The Daily PPILL #316

The usually accepted thinking, is that the past shapes our present. We look into history to understand who we are. We even have a maxim in digital communications that goes "the best prediction of the next sample, is the immediately prior one". All of these are logic and have elements of truth. However, if you want to change things, you have to...

There’s Chemistry – The Daily PPILL #315

When it comes to our Channel ecosystem, and in all honesty, pretty much everything else, we can take a lesson out of our chemistry course. My wife, who is a PhD in Biochemistry will roll her eyes if she reads this, but here I go: Size matters. When recruiting partners or interconnecting them in your ecosystem, the relative scale of each...

Flower Power – The Daily PPILL #314

My anniversary was a few days ago. Of course I did get a gift, and I did make a reservation for dinner. But on this day, I like to wake up my wife to the aroma of flowers, but I don't want the flowers to whither overnight, so I had to make a customary dash in the morning to the nearest spot where I could get flowers. On my way out, a clerk smiled...

Love (for the B-Listers) makes the world go ’round – The Daily PPILL #313

We live in a world of A-lists. It is very easy to hear it "straight from the horse's mouth". If a celebrity is on Twitter, or any other platform, we can just follow them, watch their videos on YouTube or perhaps buy their book. That is wonderful. There has never been as much quality (and crappy as well) and variety of information out there since...

Is anybody gullible who believes the AI? – The Daily PPILL #312

Ever since ChatGPT made release 3.5, there has been more and more interest, and all kinds of people have been giving it a go. But I have the sense that many of us have also taken the approach that at least I like to go with when meeting someone new. We have trusted it. We have assumed that its responses were accurate. We are so used to relying on...

Optimism: How positive thinking moves you towards your goals – The Daily PPILL #311

When we are optimistic, we are more likely to take risks and try new things. We are more likely to believe in ourselves and our abilities, and to take action towards our goals. We are also more likely to stay positive and resilient in the face of adversity. This is fundamentally important when getting ourselves into something hard. An optimistic...

Re-post: Habit, Process, or Ritual? – The Daily PPILL #310

According to OpenAI ChatGPT, a process is a series of steps or actions that are taken in order to achieve a particular result. It is a way of doing something, typically involving a number of separate stages, each of which contributes to the overall outcome. Processes can be simple or complex, and they can be carried out by individuals or by teams...

Re-post: Partner Programs as an extension of the Operating Model – The Daily PPILL #309

Most partner programs look alike, and some of them look like they would've been thrown together from whatever was available. But organizations that don’t place enough care in how they design their partner programs may be wasting a huge opportunity to create and lock-in value. One of the fundamental pillars of the strategy of an organization is...

Re-post: The one thing you should do today – The Daily PPILL #308

Before you do anything else, ask yourself: "What is the one thing that I can (and must) do today to get me closer to my goals?" If you do nothing else, do that one thing. It will be worth more, and you'll feel more satisfied than after a full day of nonsense and busyness.

Re-post: The flywheel – The Daily PPILL #307

So many models today include this concept, but what is a flywheel? IRL, it is a massive -like with a lot of mass- wheel that keeps turning. Every internal combustion engine has one, where its function is to smooth out the motion originating from the cylinders pushing one at a time. There are other applications where the energy storage of a...

Re-post: Change before change gets to you – The Daily PPILL #306

There is nothing worse than getting caught in something that you did not expect, that you did not prepare for. When you know something is coming, it allows you to build the necessary skills, strength, or resources to be in a better position. In addition, it also allows you to get out of other competing endeavors. So if that's settled, let's look...

Re-post: Determination – The Daily PPILL #305

If we don’t have the will, we’ll never get things done. We may never even get started. Hannibal (not the fictional serial killer of “Silence of the Lambs”, but the Carthaginian general), has been recognized as one of the greatest military strategists of all times. Among other things, he famously invaded Italy (and the Roman Republic) during the...
