How do you become an expert?
Is there any other way than just picking one particular subject, deconstructing, and digging deeper and deeper?
A few days ago I read about an incredible advance in superconductors. Superconductors are only currently viable at very low temperatures, in the order of hundreds of negative degrees. This article stated that a group of physicists made a breakthrough with a superconductor at room temperature. I couldn’t do anything but laugh when I found out that the article was actually a satire and that allegedly the physicists made this possible by cooling down the room to minus 300 degrees. They didn’t come up with a new superconductor, they just redefined “room temperature”.
This same way, it may be possible that you redefine not your status of expert, but the subject you are an expert in. When you think about it, you are the only one who has lived the life you lived, became interested in the disparate subjects you fancy, and had the experiences you had. You are the expert in YOU.
What would be interesting is to identify two or three intersecting subjects that you have a good understanding of. That would make you an expert on that intersection instantly. Let’s say you know a bit of cybersecurity, and you also like IoT, but you also know quite a bit about the healthcare industry. That could make you an expert in Healthcare IoT Security. Who else knows about that?
We all know more than we think.
