How many times have you heard “such a talented person”?
Some people say there is no talent, there is only effort; that the only way to become proficient, even reach mastery in something, is through sweat and tears, deliberate practice, and with a lot of determination driving you through the challenges.
I disagree. There are certain things that are natural talents that will help you reach excellency in any field. In basketball, is how tall you are, if you want to sing, you are born with a certain structure in your vocal box. No amount of practice will be ever enough to change these things.
There is another pervasive thing that behaves in ways similar to talent: opportunity. I mean, baseline opportunities you have available to you from the get go.
But here is the thing: Most “talents” are not as palpable as the mark on the wall above your head, and you’ll never be sure that “you have it” until you try. TRY HARD. Give it all it you got, without holding back, and with the certainty that you could not have done more.
When it comes to opportunity, it is a little bit different. Let me make this clear: I am not discounting the challenge of facing lack of opportunities. It can be crushing, life limiting. But it is possible to create new opportunities for yourself, being bold and with some effort.
So, for most people, it comes down to effort. It is the only dial we have.
