Habits (Repost) – The Daily PPILL #369

The topic that is occupying my mind lately, is the nature of exponentials and how they play into business. I am working on some long form content, which makes it hard to publish my regular Daily PPILL while I also take care of business. But I thought, why not dig up some of my favorite posts? Here is another one:

There is an awesome quote by no one else but Gandhi:

“Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny.”

(BTW, I feel like only Gandhi can pull off such a run-off sentence without half the audience nodding off).

As a professional manager or marketer, we are in the business of changing behavior. I have always tried not to forget this, especially when we are asked to hit a goal (a “destiny”).

In our increasingly results-driven society, we may be tempted to give in and accept that we must promise to produce an outcome, to hit the metric, when in reality, to effect lasting change, we just have to follow some version of Gandhi’s advice. Brainstorm, innovate, spell it out, and communicate it; put products, services, and marketing campaigns behind it, and then, incentivize the behavior. Create new habits. Sustain that cycle enough, and those habits will become ingrained deep enough to turn into values, which will generate lasting results.

The shortcut’s life is short.

Backward compatibility (Repost) – The Daily PPILL #368

The topic that is occupying my mind lately, is the nature of exponentials and how they play into business. I am working on some long form content, which makes it hard to publish my regular Daily PPILL while I also take care of business. But I thought, why not dig up some of my favorite posts? Here is one: The concept of "backward compatibility"...

Ode to the middle manager – The Daily PPILL #365

As long as there has been organized work, there has been supervisors. The often hated individuals who often make sure that the work is done under spec, and on-time. The ones that are "responsible" for production, for hitting the quota, for making the numbers. Each worker may have their own idea of what to do, how to do it, and when to do it, but...

“Don’t know everything, but I am fast learner” – The Daily PPILL #363

I bet you heard that before. I would even bet that you have uttered it sometime. It speaks to human nature to our energy and interest to figure out things, even if we are not perfect memory machines that can recall any piece of information at will. But how about if I told you that AI seems to behave this way more and more. Here is an anecdote: A...

Hypecycle – The Daily PPILL #360

If you have anything to do with technology, you are most likely familiar with the "hypecycle" and how technologies, when being introduced at first are not taken into account, but as they start to get traction, and people get excited, they are usually overhyped. Most of the time this creates a gap between people's expectations and what the...

Reverse Hitchhiking – The Daily PPILL #358

I'll start today with an anecdote. When I went to college for my undergraduate in Electronics Engineering, few of us had cars, especially because in the town I went to school, most people were admitted to college before they hit the legal age for driving. Buses were a pain in the you-know-what, and they ran few and far in-between. Many of us...

‘lectric – The Daily PPILL #356

To me it is pretty clear, but there are still sources that try to make it look like the environmental impact of an electric vehicle is higher than one equipped with an internal combustion engine. Here are a couple of graphics that show the data, you may argue that the data is skewed, but you can be the judge. First, there is the consumption, a...

The masculinity of gardening – The Daily PPILL #353

Are we still in the celebrity CEO era? I think we are. I believe I heard someone calling its end, but the market never got the message. We continue to laud -sometimes even worship- the energetic visionary, and even despotic fearless leader in front of some of the companies that are the protagonists of our changing world. In our mind, they may be...

Absolute and relative – The Daily PPILL #351

What matters? Is it the actual number? Or is it compared to something? As many times, the answer is, "depends". When we are trying to determine if we reached a goal, if we "made it", we have to go with the absolute number. "Black or white", "night or day"; it has to be clear as that. If we have succeeded on our quarterly goals, we either made the...

Everything is a subroutine – The Daily PPILL #349

We live in the age of the API. Most solutions have an open API (Application Programming Interface - Just in case you don't remember what it stands for), to communicate with them. APIs allow software to communicate among each other, making it possible for organizations to address their specific needs through customized solutions, created from...

Inexhaustible: Unveiling the Illusion of Idea Scarcity – The Daily PPILL #346

In my daily writing, I save some drafts and some titles to be developed later and today, I noticed a pattern. Every few weeks or days, I save some kind of title that speaks to scarcity of ideas, to the day that will eventually come where I have nothing to write about. And the interesting thing about it, is that that day never really arrives. I...

Retro all around – The Daily PPILL #343

I was reading a case study about the once revolutionary "Mas por Menos" supermarket chain in Costa Rica. They were the first ones to introduce the self service experience in that country almost 100 years ago. Before them, there was only the regular corner store, an experience that I remember seeing through South America when I was a child. For...

Is the human an enabler or a limitation? – The Daily PPILL #342

There is a different way of thinking of "the singularity", perhaps in its lesser mode. Whit systems that are capable of learning, we can draw an analog from human mentor-mentee relationships. As the student becomes better at the craft, they need the teacher less and less, until the point when the supervisor instead of adding value, and to being...

Actionable AI – The Daily PPILL #341

Even with all the buzz around AI, and all the rapid advancements, sometimes we still fall into thinking that nothing's going to change. Everything will as we are used to, and no, no jobs will be disrupted. Here is one to make you think again: with the latest iOS release, Apple included at least a couple of "Premium" voices: "Jamie", a male UK...

Patents vs. secrets – The Daily PPILL #340

How intellectual property is protected seems to be quite a mystery for many. I am no lawyer, but ideas, designs, and methods can be protected in at least a couple of different ways, very different one from the other: The first one is just plain secrecy. If no one can see it, no one can copy it. This is the case of secret formulas for example. The...

Re-post: Less is more – The Daily PPILL #339

In any competitive industry, there's ever-pressing need to improve products and services, and we can get caught in the relentless pursuit of the added feature. But this is not always what the customer wants. I am not referring to the price-sensitive customer who is happy to get the minimum possible as long as she gets a good price. I am talking...

Has convergence gone too far? – The Daily PPILL #334

In the 80s and 90s it was all about the number of gadgets you had. The video camera, a Walkman, DSLR, a VCR, then a CD player, and a computer. There are some funny pictures of all the devices we used to have, the one below is legendary. Then we went through a phase of consolidation, which started long ago, when we started bringing together the...

The only thing between a self-driving car and you is a few lawyers – The Daily PPILL #332

When new technologies are introduced, there is a sense of awe that -honestly- inspires me. The wonder of discovering what "this thing can do" and imagining how your life be in the future is something be worth seeking out. I mean, heck, there are people would even stand in line around the block FOR A WHOLE NIGHT to get their hands on a new piece...

Marketing to the AI: SEO in the age of ChatGPT – The Daily PPILL #330

As it happens lately, things develop faster than usual, and in unexpected ways. The concept outlined in this article came as a revelation. But not in its literal way, where basically, the article highlights the fundamental difference in user intent between chat-based interactions and classic search. Classic search engines return multiple answers...

The time for ideas – The Daily PPILL #328

"An idea ahead of its time" Bet you heard that before. I have not only heard about it, I have lived through these, at least a couple of times trying to be way too cute and not getting the timing right. Just two examples: wanting to can coconut water in 1989, or starting a food delivery platform over the Internet in 2002. How to know? When is an...

Reimagining the Third Place: The Dynamics of Home, Work, and Escapes – The Daily PPILL #327

I bet you heard about "The Third Place". The concept was more in the popular media once Starbucks started to talk about it. If you have never heard about it, your first place is your home, your second place is work, and then we all have this need to escape somewhere else, that's the third place. I've been riding this pony since the 2000's, when...

The Digital Revolution, are we there yet? – The Daily PPILL #323

We are still in the middle of one of the biggest transformations in humanity. I am thinking digitization. Sure, there are many others that are happening simultaneously and digitization started a while ago. That's how innovation works, with "nested S curves" whose effect aggregates and produces the exponentials we are experiencing. Digitization...

Beyond Look and Feel: The User Interface is Key to Success – The Daily PPILL #319

"That's just look and feel" The "real" thing is what's running behind it. Or so they say. I you subscribe to thins thinking, you may be missing a fundamental fact. User Interface, or where people interact with something, is where adoption lives, and is the doorway to exponential growth. If people don't enjoy using something, they may use it a few...

Overriding the AI – The Daily PPILL #318

With all the talk about regulating AI, we hear the extremes coming to light. You have those that think we should just let everything run its course, and then there are some that think that we need a "kill switch". Others believe we need to have a human in the loop always. In many ways, this approach seems reasonable at first, but it defeats the...

The big ideas of 2020, three years later – The Daily PPILL #317

Looking back into how we imagined the future can be fascinating. We have all snickered when watching the Jetsons and we have turned "where's my jet pack" into kind of a critique of predictions in general. THIS ARTICLE was a featured article on LinkedIn in December 2019, and we all know what happened after that. We experienced first-hand Mike...

The Power of Intent: How the Future shapes the present – The Daily PPILL #316

The usually accepted thinking, is that the past shapes our present. We look into history to understand who we are. We even have a maxim in digital communications that goes "the best prediction of the next sample, is the immediately prior one". All of these are logic and have elements of truth. However, if you want to change things, you have to...
